A stylish and emotionally literate thriller from Phil Rowlands. I think unremitting grief is a terribly difficult thing to write about and the earlier chapters in particular put me through the emotional mincer but then came a real blindsiding plot twist that had me gasping. The author is very interested in investigating how characters' personal histories affect their responses to one another. The grief-stricken central character, Sara, is horribly manipulated in the story (I found myself muttering 'bastard!' regularly under my breath) and if there's a sequel planned, I'd like to see her begin to fight her own battles with the outside world, with her eyes wide open.

A smart, intelligent, beautifully written thriller that drew me right in to Sara's struggles, tragedies and triumphs and had me still turning the pages way past my bedtime. In fact I read the whole book in less than 24 hours, and felt a distinct wrench when I reached the final page. The two very different settings - the isolated Welsh barn and the crowded streets of Siena - are beautifully counterpointed, echoing the differences between the highs and lows of Sara's journey. The characters are real, vivid and memorable - and we truly care about what happens to Sara. And the plot twists and turns - wow! I'm looking forward to the next offering by this delicious writer - and intend to read it sitting in a sunny piazza in Siena - a city which reading this book has made me long to visit!

This is a terrific debut novel from screenwriter/producer Phil Rowlands. Pure chance plunges Sara Llewellyn into pain and grief and her life spirals out of control. She fights her way out of despair and she begins to mend in Tuscany. Until her life is shattered once again in a devastating climax at the Palio in Siena.

Phil Rowlands has written an interesting debut, showing how fragile life is. Sara's husband and son are killed, the incidental victims of a crime, and her life falls apart. Seeking answers she goes to Siena where she is caught up in the sinister side of the city. An intriguing story against a beautiful Italian backdrop.

A captivating novel full of unexpected twists and turns which keeps the reader engaged until the final page. Characters are skilfully crafted with their flaws revealed as well as their strengths. There is a strong contrast between the first half of the book which immerses the reader in the grief of loved ones lost and then the tempo increases in the second half as we are transported to the beautiful city of Siena and the setting for the plot's climax. The author has clearly researched Siena and its culture in great depth which adds to the book's appeal. A promising debut novel and certainly a good read.

I found this book to be a gripping read.

Written from a psychological point of view, its not your average crime thriller and all the better for it.

It would appeal to a larger audience.

It has at least two unpredictable twists to the plot throughout.

The ending is also unexpected.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend 'Siena' for its wonderful setting and refreshing subject matter.
